The Best Thing Facebook Has Ever Done For Your Love Lifeby Michelle L. Dozois on August 23, 2011
This is huge news: Starting later this week, Facebook will finally allow you to approve posts and photos you’re tagged in — before they show up on your profile.
To quote Techcrunch: “Pause. Take a drink if you need to. If you hear fireworks in the streets this morning, you know why.”
Now you don’t have to compulsively check your email the morning after a party for the alerts to roll in (“So-and-so has tagged you in a photo on Facebook”) so you can run to the nearest computer (Hi, random girl at Starbucks, can I give you $5 to borrow your laptop for 3 minutes?) to untag any photos that portray you in a less-than-flattering light.
Not that you’re deliberately making bad decisions that will result in photos that you don’t want everyone and your mother to see. But won’t it be nice to have some control over whether or not your crush sees that photo of you at a horrifically unflattering angle (before you have a chance to take it down)? Or whether or not your significant other sees a snap of you next to that person who they’re convinced likes you (even though absolutely nothing fishy is going on)?
We’re not saying you need to be deceptive, but it is your profile. You should be able to control it. And sure, you could disable tags entirely so that no one ever sees photos of you (except the ones you upload), but this new option gives you much more flexibility.
Here’s the how-to from Facebook:
How do I turn on the option to review posts and photos I’m tagged in before they appear on my profile?
If you’d like to review posts and photos you’re tagged in before they go on your profile, turn on Profile Review. Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Manage How Tags Work > Change Settings > Profile Review.
If you have Profile Review off, then tags from friends are automatically approved. Whether you have Profile Review on or not, tags from nonfriends require your approval before they go on your profile.
