The Guardian recently posted a poll asking if  dating is too expensive. Maybe the real question is, do you have to spend a lot to have a good time? Just because money is tight doesn’t mean your romantic life has to suffer. Here are a few frugal and free ideas that won’t make dating such a financial burden.

Plan to cook for your partner. Science proves sharing food is a great way to bond. Roasts and casseroles provide a lot of food and are often full of simple ingredients. Pick up a bottle of Trader Joe’s three buck Chuck ($2 in many areas) or a box for $10. To make the occasion more special, put down a tablecloth or use a sheet as a makeshift one. Tea candles and low lighting will set a romantic mood. For dessert: NYC condoms are free.

Lately there has been a surge in pinball and arcade bars. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon and depending on how good you are, it’s super cheap. I’m far from the best duck hunter, but the last time I went to an arcade it cost me $5 for a few hours of gaming. And $10 for a couple of drinks.

If you live in New York or LA, instead of watching TV at home, sign up to get ticket alerts for late night shows. The Colbert Report or the Late Show with David Letterman rely on audience participation, and tickets pop up frequently. Spontaneous dates can often be the most special.

Cranium pieces

Group dates can bring up unexpected costs. Why not host a game night? It could even turn into a regular event with so many options like, Scattergories, Clue, Fishbowl and Cranium. For munchies, chips and salsa won’t set you back too much either. Guests can BYOB, which is the biggest penny pincher.
