Flirty Women Get Better Deals, Says Science

Ladies, get your flirting hats on. Turns out our womanly wiles do make us rich (and not in the prostituting sense). Charming the pants off a male salesperson also gets us a fifth off the price, according to a new study from the University of California, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be all that surprised.

The secret to this million-dollar flirt, in case you’re curious, lies in the perfect combo of  “warmth, friendliness, playfulness, flattery and sexiness.”

The experiment consisted of asking 100 men and women to pretend to sell a $1200 car to a potential female buyer, whose description was prepared. One described a lady who “flirted through the negotiation by looking the seller up and down, leaning forward and touching the seller’s arm, flattering the seller and winking when asking for his or her best price.” The other described a boring business transaction.

If the seller was a man, these womanly tricks resulted in a 20% lower price. But if the seller was a shedevil lady herself, the flirting led to worse deals. Being too friendly also didn’t work out in the fictitious woman’s favor. Too friendly and caring, said lead researcher Dr. Laura Kray, causes women to be thought of as easy prey.

You got that? Be cute, but not too cute. And keep this in mind if you find yourself bargaining with a female saleswoman.
