It’s bad enough to lose your job because it derails your career, but let’s add to that this: 75% of women say they would be unlikely to date an unemployed man. 33% said no way, Jose, ever nuh-uh. 42% said maybe (with the stipulation that they would not want to be in the relationship if the man did not have a plan in place.) 21% said they would date an unemployed man no matter what.
To women, having a job is huge, and I understand. Not because I want a guy to be rolling in benjamins and buying me stuff, but because having a job is a sign that you have your shit together and care about stuff and are ambitious and are working toward something, etc. But! Obviously (especially today), people are between jobs all the time. I have a friend who pretty much quits his job whenever he feels like it and then travels to Iceland for two weeks and then comes back and easily finds another job. Some people can do that.
And if you’re in a happy relationship with a wonderful, loving person that loses his job, I’d hope you wouldn’t kick him to the curb.
Irene LaCota of It’s Just Lunch says:
Not having a job will definitely make it harder for men to date someone they don’t already know. This is the rare area, compared to other topics we’ve done surveys on, where women’s old-fashioned beliefs about sex roles seem to apply.
So if you’re at a bar and you’re talking to a girl and she asks, “so what do you do?” And you say, “I’m between jobs”, she might not care that you can afford it or you have a plan or blahblahblah. She might be turned off, unfairly so.
Men do not feel the same way. Almost two-thirds said dating an unemployed woman was fine, with 19% having no reservations and 46% said they were positive they would date an unemployed women.
Question for the women who would diss an unemployed guy, no matter what. Would you prefer that he had a very high-level job and was never around to cuddle with you?
As a commentator on Jezebel says, “Depends. Do you have an air conditioned apartment with a flat screen TV, snacks, and a subscription to HBO? If so, I’d use that as my “hook” to get girls to date you.”
