Each year, we spend our spare time obsessing over the life and times of celebrity couples. Are they together? Is she pregnant? Did he cheat? The headlines are always the same, and yet we can’t stop reading.
2013 brought us royal and reality TV babies. Film sets and lavish weddings. Mix that with millions of dollars in earnings and you’ve got some pretty great stories. Throughout the year, 10 couples flooded our news feeds.
Here are the 10 most talked about celebrity couples of 2013.
10. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
In February, the Internet was buzzing as New Yorkers spied Stone and Garfield all over the city while filming The Amazing Spider-Man 2. For months, fans followed Stone and Garfield around the city hoping to catch a glimpse of a Spidey love scene. The buzz is sure to pick up again as press for the film kicks off prior to its 2014 release.
9. Jennifer Anniston and Justin Theroux
Jennifer Anniston is the quintessential celebrity obsession. For two decades, we’ve been consumed by her personal life. After her engagement to Justin Theroux last year, 2013 brought a year’s worth of rumors: Is the wedding off? Are they back together? Is she pregnant? Is she keeping the baby and ditching the man? The headlines were endless, but the reality is no one actually knows. Though Aniston and Theroux didn’t make it down the aisle this year, the couple still seems to be together. We’ll be watching in 2014 — we just can’t help ourselves.
8. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Justin Timberlake owned the music scene in 2013, with not one but two No. 1 albums. But this year, the media seemed to be more concerned with Timberlake’s personal life as they constantly questioned: Where is Jessica? JT married actress Jessica Biel in October 2012, but the couple were rarely seen together in 2013, setting off a number of breakup rumors. From Timberlake’s Video Vanguard Award acceptance at the MTV Video Music Awards to the Saturday Night Live after party, Biel was nowhere to be found. With the divorce rumors at an all-time high, we’ll have to wait to till next year to see if this couple pulls through. Hey, maybe Jessica is just really busy with her acting career.
7. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert
Shelton and Lambert are the First Couple of country music. They’ve taken home the Country Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year awards for the last four years. But despite their mega music success, they’re also another couple we’ve watched struggle all year with rumors of cheating and divorce. The Voice judge Shelton never confronted the rumors directly, only making jokes via Twitter with regard to the cheating reports. But with his record ratings and her record sales, it seems like we’ll be into Shelton and Lambert whatever happens.
6. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis
The That ’70s Show alums kicked the year off with tons of controversy. Kutcher was still settling his divorce from then-49-year-old wife Demi Moore when he took his relationship with the sexiest woman in the world very public. Just this week, the Huffington Post reports rumors the two are prepping for an engagement next month. We’ll be watching.
5. Katy Perry and John Mayer
Katy and John actually kept a long courtship secret from the world, privately dating on and off beginning in the summer of 2012. The two exchanged a series of love letters, and, yes, turned some of those amorous emotions into songs. Perry’s latest hit single, “Unconditional,” is supposedly one of those songs. And now, the two are promoting a joint single together. Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure?
4. Beyoncé and Jay Z
Beyoncé is arguably the most talked-about woman on the planet right now, thanks to her recent surprise album drop. In addition to her record-breaking album sales, the singer generated more than $100 million in ticket sales this year for her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. Jay didn’t do too shabby either: His album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, debuted at No. 1 with 500,000 copies sold in its first week, and he kicked off his Magna Carta World Tour last month. Forbes named Bey and Jay this year’s highest-earning celebrity couple, with $95 million in earnings (and that’s before Beyoncé’s album dropped).
3. Prince William and Kate Middleton
At the beginning of 2013, all eyes were on a pregnant Kate Middleton, who eventually gave birth to the future king in July. Baby George may be only five months old, but this is only the beginning for this royal family. Long live the Queen.
2. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
It is bewildering how obsessed we are with Kim Kardashian. The reality TV starlet-turned-model-turned-mogul has made a living (a really, really nice living) by convincing us we care about her life. After a year of embarrassing heartache following the fallout from her failed marriage to ex-husband Kris Humphries, 2013 year was a year of love for Kim K, who began the year by announcing she was pregnant with love rapper Kanye West. The couple, who tried so desperately all year to convince us that yes, they actually are a couple, got engaged in October. The two are currently eyeing France’s opulent Palace of Versailles as they plan their 2014 wedding.
1. Barack and Michelle Obama
He’s one of the most powerful men in the world. She’s the fashionable First Lady. And whether you were talking about the couple’s political activity or Michelle’s second Vogue cover, you were talking. Their legacy this year: Demonstrating the beauty of a lasting and supportive marriage. Twenty-one years and counting, the Obamas are inspiration for any couple with a dream – you can do it together.
