Writer Caroline Paul and illustrator Wendy MacNaughton have teamed up to help us all answer the most pressing question of the Internet Age: should you Google that person? Their flowchart, which is hilarious, but also wise, advises would-be stalkers (“amateur research experts,” I call us) on when it is and is not a good idea to fall for the siren call of the search bar. Because while it is easy — so, so easy — to figure out that your adorable next-door neighbor was the beatboxer for his college a cappella group and that your ex’s ex belongs to a freegan collective with an active social media account, it is not always what one would call “A Good Idea.”
Some important questions they want you to consider: is the person standing near you right now? Do you want to date them? Are you looking for their address? Are they famous? Do you want to feel bad about yourself? Also, will there be cat pictures? Because if there are gonna be cat pictures, Paul and MacNaughton say definitely Google it. Be warned, though: the pair does not consider procrastination a valid reason for obsessive web searching, so it kind of seems like maybe they just don’t understand what the Internet is for.
