If you are searching for the one, it seems it’s all on the nose. Allegedly, everyone should be getting a good whiff of the clothes a potential partner has been wearing (un-deodorized… for three days). A new service called Smell Dating (no, I am not making this up) is proving we still haven’t seen everything when it comes to matchmaking – letting biology do it’s thing for singles out there.
How does it work? Basically, the user needs to wear a top for three days without deodorant (eugh). They then mail said stinky top to Smell Dating, where it is cut up into fabric swatches and sent out to other singles. In return, they get their own little selection of smelly swatches to decide which scent appeals most. If there is a match between two appealing smells – the company will tee you up!
It all comes down to Science, people.
Every person smells different. We all have a personal ‘odor print’ that is attractive to some, and unattractive to others. According to biological anthropologist Dr. Helen E. Fisher, not only do our ‘smells’ release a host of memories, they can also create a “link between male essence and female reproductive health [that] may provide a clue to attraction.”
“Women perceive odors better than men do. They are a hundred times more sensitive to Exaltolide, a compound much like men’s sexual musk; they can smell a mild sweat from about three feet away; and at mid-cycle, during ovulation, women can smell men’s musk even more strongly,” Fisher states on Psychology Today. “Perhaps ovulating women become more susceptible to infatuation when they can smell male essence and are unconsciously drawn toward it to maintain menstrual cycling.”
Apparently, in parts of Greece, men carry their hankies in their armpits and offer them to the women they invite to dance… and it works!
“At Smell Dating we understand the metrics of compatibility are chemical; connection is a matter of intercourse not interface. The Internet has replaced fleshy experience with flat apparitions, avatars and painstakingly curated profile pics,” Smell Dating explains on its website.
“Smell Dating closes digital distance by restoring your molecular intuition. Our members make connections via deeply intuitive cues, perfected in the ancient laboratory of human evolution. Surrender yourself to a poignant experience of body odor.”
Anything is possible! Go get your sniff on, I guess?
