Wholphin Romance: 5 Unique and Ponderable SF Dates

Wholphin is a quarterly DVD magazine published by McSweeney’s, lovingly encoded with unique and ponderable films designed to make you feel the way we felt when we learned that dolphins and whales sometimes, you know, do it. We like the Wholphin, so we thought we’d ask its curator, Brent Hoff, to suggest a few dates. These dates all involve watching a film or tv show that, in some cases, is hard to find, effort that will surely be appreciated. Also, Brent viewed his five dates as a progression with the same person — a nice new twist.

Date #1: Are You The Favorite Person of Anybody?

The date: How about we… eat sushi at Tekka and watch “Are You The Favorite Person of Anybody?”

Why it’s great: Bring a copy of Best of Wholphin # 1 to Tekka Japanese restaurant. Arrive in time for the 9:30pm seating and hope that Nobu is well into his private sake stash and thus willing to let you replace the restaurant’s sole source of entertainment — a Bee Gees concert DVD playing on a small TV behind the bar — with the Miranda July/Miguel Arteta short film “Are You The Favorite Person of Anybody” starring John C. Reilly. It will undoubtedly inspire deep conversation about the nature of love and relationships. By the end of the night, with the help of a few sakes, you will undoubtedly BE your date’s new favorite person.

Date #2: Two Cars One Night

The date: How about we… eat at Namu and watch “Two Cars One Night”.

Why it’s great: Second dates can be fraught with tension. You’ve already made a statement, “I like you enough to spend another night with you,” so it’s important to show your date that your skill at providing a uniquely fun time is not a one shot thing. Since Namu is without a doubt the best restaurant in this little hamlet, and “Two Cars One Night” is the most romantic short film ever made, it’s the only way to go.

Date #3: Sex Magic

The date: How about we… eat dim sum at Shanghai Dumpling King and watch Sex Magic.

Why it’s great: This is where we put this whole physical attraction thing to the test. If he/she likes you after watching this documentary about a sacred sexual shaman from Sedona who puts his “lingum” into every hippie he meets, then you know you’ve got something real. And really, what’s the point of a third date if not to share some Xiao Lin Bao?

Date #4: Withnail and I

The date: How about we… watch “Withnail and I” and drink Dead Man’s Boots.

Why it’s great: Dead Man’s Boots are a special drink served in Park City during Sundance involving Tequila, Bourbon, Ginger Brew and lime. You drink them while watching “Withnail and I.” Every time they drink, you drink. It’s a drinking game. Do I need to explain this?

Date #5: Twin Peaks (Weekend Marathon)

The date: How about we… watch a Twin Peaks Weekend Marathon and consume a bottle of tequila.

Why it’s great: Fifth date? Face it, you’re a couple. Might as well start acting like one. Nice work!
