Boston Date Ideas: Best Boston Dates to Beat the Heat (or Rain)by Jess Lander on July 24, 2013
As the temps reach the high 90s, plus humidity, there’s no better way to cool off than some good old air conditioning, a frosty brew or both. Beat the oppressive heat with these chill dates—all of which are also perfect places to duck for cover during a summer shower (because you never know with the flaky New England weather).
306 Northern Ave
If you’re going to spend the day inside, it might as well be at Harpoon Brewery, where for just $5 you get a tour of the digs and an all-you-can chug tasting in their recently renovated Beer Hall. Enjoy a wide selection of Harpoon and UFO brews, ranging from the Harpoon Leviathan IPA to the Craft Cider, and pair them with a freshly baked pretzel and IPA cheese sauce. Don’t let the fun stop there: take a growler to go and share over dinner.
45 Day St., Somerville
Hop on the Red Line out to Davis Square for a day of old school candlepin bowling and gourmet flatbread pizza. Reserve a walk-in lane, then split a pizza from the Flatbread Company (same building) and sip some drinks while you wait for your turn to bowl your date over in defeat. Winner picks up the tab.
100 Northern Ave
Part art museum, part perfect summer hangout spot, the ICA offers skyline views, the cool ocean breeze, cocktails and free live music on Thursday nights, plus DJs on the harbor on first Fridays. Take some time to check out the exhibits too, but if it’s art you’re most interested in, the MFA (with about 450,000 works of art to critique) will give you much more bang for your buck.
Independent Movie Date
Bad weather can make you want to stay in and watch movies all day, but being a couch potato can’t compare to a trip to one of Boston’s acclaimed independent theatres. See everything from repertory films and midnight cult classics to sing-alongs and new box office hits at the beautiful Coolidge Corner Theatre. Or, head to the smaller Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square and make it a double for the price of one. Both sell wine and beer at concessions.
561 Windsor St, Somerville
Carve a path straight to your date’s heart with some delicious Taza chocolate. For just $5 you can embark on a 45-minute tour of the Taza factory where you’ll witness how this organic, stone ground Mexican chocolate goes from cacao bean to chocolate bar. And don’t worry, you get to taste it too.
Comedy Date Night
Whether you hate the rain or hate the heat, nothing will improve your mood like a good LOL sesh. Your ticket to the Improv Asylum in the North End comes with a guaranteed, laughter-induced side cramp and provides a great excuse to cap the night off with some cannolis from Mikes or Modern, weather permitting. Or, head to The Comedy Studio in Harvard Square for a hilarious lineup and a funny magic show on Tuesdays—just be careful not to laugh so hard that your Scorpion Bowl comes out of your nose.
