Los Angeles Date Ideas: The Top 10 Organic & Limited-Diet L.A. Datesby Jenny Platt on June 07, 2013
In a city full of actors and models, everyone’s in a permanent state of bikini-readiness. And even those that aren’t use a variety of ways to describe their living and eating habits: crunchy, sustainable, pescetarian, vegan, vegetarian, green. No matter what your food preference, L.A. is pretty accommodating to your needs. There are full-on gourmet options for those who choose to follow diets that are meat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, organic and/or sustainable.
2100 Laurel Canyon Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90046
Attached to an inviting 70s-style Canyon Country Store, romantic Pace touts its use of all-organic ingredients and nitrate/hormone-free meats, for those that eat them. They source local, using many vegetables from their own garden. Though the restaurant’s focus is not on vegan cuisine, there are some vegan and vegetarian options on the menu, and the bathrooms are stocked with individual hand towels for a cozy, sustainable touch.
Agoura Hills, Studio City, Santa Monica
Hugo’s is a popular breakfast and lunch spot with a diverse menu that caters to vegans, vegetarians, and those with gluten allergies. Try a tofu scramble, mocha brownie pancakes, or a mung beans and rice quesadilla, and wash your meal down with one of several fortified juice blends.
12345 Ventura Blvd
Studio City, CA 91604
Specializing in Californian health food, The Good Earth’s dishes include certified organic free-range eggs, whole wheat wraps and ten-grain burger buns, organic baby greens, fresh juice and non-fat yogurt shakes. Gluten-free pizza is available and tofu can be substituted for meat in many dishes. And if your date’s not making you feel warm and tingly, the signature tea blends will.
128 Old Topanga Canyon Road
Topanga, CA 90290
This quaint, scenic woodland restaurant is located in the mountain along a creek, frogs croaking and all. Menu items are organic and locally sourced, and meats (yes, there are meats for carnivores here) are hormone-free. The romantic setting for many nuptials, Inn of the Seventh Ray also offers vegan and pescetarian-friendly options—plus, if you’re lactose intolerant, there’s a non-dairy soup each day!
Downtown L.A. & Culver City
If you want to offer your vegan partner abundant choice, head to Shojin, an elegant organic vegan and macrobiotic Japanese restaurant. Options include not only soups and salads, but creative vegan sushi rolls, as well as seitan and Portobello mushroom steaks. Many dishes are also gluten-free, and the menu is so tempting that even a carnivore will be impressed.
2303 Wilshire Blvd.
Santa Monica, CA 90403
A high-rated and wildly popular little breakfast spot in Santa Monica, Blue Daisy boasts an extensive menu of fresh, organic options, from sweet and savory crepes (which can all be made with gluten-free buckwheat) to plentiful vegetarian options, beverages made with soy milk and phenomenally orgasmic crispy zucchini hash browns—which can also be made gluten-free!
1604 Pacific Ave.
Venice, CA 9029
As if vegan macrobiotic cuisine weren’t enough, Seed Kitchen also uses biodegradable packaging and sources local organic produce whenever possible. A unique menu of grain bowls, paninis, tacos and burgers (made with seitan and tempeh, of course) is available, and desserts are flavored with maple or brown rice sweeteners.
3818 W. Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
This organic vegan joint offers wheat- and gluten-free meals, non-dairy cashew cheese (which is quite rich, if you haven’t tried it), tempeh bacon, soy butter, and plenty of other vegan substitutes. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, Flore is an excellent choice for a vegan-friendly date.
2135 Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90026
GMOs are not welcome at the adorable Elf Café, which cooks everything in grape seed oil and sources many ingredients from local farmers. Its Mediterranean menu includes such items as vegan shwarma, tahini avocado puree, Moroccan vegetable tagine, and other enticing dishes. And you can’t go wrong with the fresh rosewater lemonade!
Los Angeles & Venice
Your date has a strictly raw diet? No problem! Come to Café Gratitude, where both raw and cooked dishes are available and are 100% organic, no matter what.
