How a Spoon Can Save a Woman’s Life

spoonFascinating story from The Guardian today: women and girls (sometimes very, very, young girls) who are at risk of forced marriage are being told to put a spoon in their underwear. It sounds like some rural wives’ tale, but the reasoning is devastatingly practical: a hidden spoon will set off the alarm at airport security, allowing these women precious time alone with airport security, at which point they have the opportunity to let it be known that they’re being forced to marry against their will.

The life-saving advice comes from Karma Nirvana, a UK-based charity that supports victims of forced marriage. In Britain, the number of forced marriages annually might be as high as 5,000 cases, at least a third of which involve women under the age of 16.
