If you don’t know what “Gay Chicken” is, you’ve clearly never wandered into a bar frequented by bros at 2 a.m. “Gay Chicken” is a game in which two men test the bounds of their machismo by leaning in to kiss each other and whoever gives up before meeting the other man’s lips is “gay” because he’s not secure enough in his sexual orientation. If this sounds bizarrely homophobic to you, well, that’s because it is.
A new video produced by the Norwegian comedy troupe, Kollektivet, challenges the homophobia inherent in “Gay Chicken” with results that are poignant, tender, and by the end, hilarious. The video starts out just as you’d expect any game of “Gay Chicken”—with one man encouraging the other to play. Neither backs down, and they end up kissing passionately, sleeping together, and embarking on a life of love, marriage, child-rearing, and ultimately illness. Anyway, then the end happens. And you will laugh. And also feel angry, but mostly, you will have yourself a nice gay chuckle. Which is kind of the point.
