How to Propose to a ‘Settlers of Catan’ Fanby Chiara Atik on May 28, 2013
HowAboutWe’s Customer Service Manager, Claire, is a massive fan of “Settlers of Catan,” a multi-player board game in which settlers try to colonize territory and build up resources (think a modernized Oregon Trail). So when her boyfriend of three and a half years, Pete, decided to pop the question over the weekend, he found the perfect way to ask her to marry him:
By creating a custom-made proposal playing card, and surprising her during the game.
“We probably play a couple of times a month,” Claire, 26, told us. “But usually I’m the one leading the Catan-playing charge. He likes it, but is not obsessed on the level that I am. Saturday night he was like ‘Yeah, I just have a real hankering to play some Catan!’”
The “Proposal Card” that Pete made was a development card, which meant the 31-year-old Brooklynite had to work feverishly to get the requisite wheat, ore, and sheep in order to be able to draw from the correct pile (where the crucial card was hidden). After an hour or two, he finally got the card he needed. Here’s Claire describing the scene:
“He said, ‘I hate playing two-player Catan because I feel like I’m being really aggressive and attacking you.’ So I assumed he had a monopoly card and was going to steal my brick (a crucial game-winning resource) from me. So of course I called him an asshole and literally said ‘I can’t believe you’re about to do this.’ And then he laid down the proposal card – which I really didn’t believe he was going to do. I then dove across the board to kiss him, he managed to get the ring out, and eventually I remembered to say yes (many kisses and tears later).”
Another sweet thing? When Claire emailed Pete to tell him how people had been reacting to his creative proposal, here’s what he had to say to her:
“Really? Wow, I had no idea this would be received with so much praise. I just thought I was doing something that you would like, to make the proposal special for you. Which I think it did, and that’s all I’m glad about!”
As for whether they’ll incorporate “Settlers” into the wedding, Claire tells us, “as of yet there are no ‘Settlers of Catan’ plans for the wedding, but my bachelorette party will DEFINITELY have tons of settlin.’”
Congratulations, Claire and Pete!
