Today, Vulture’s excellent oral history series of seminal moments in TV pop culture tackles the iconic party scene in Clueless. It turns out love was blossoming amongst the “homies” — bathroom head-shaving incidents, clog-induced injuries, and all — just not between Tai and Elton.
As Cher walks out of the party in this scene, the camera passes over the swimming pool and captures a dude puking into the water, a couple of swimmers lunging away in disgust, and a soaking wet couple obliviously making out in the background. The couple was actually a pair of extras who volunteered to get in the pool to make some extra money that day. Years later, director Amy Heckerling randomly ran into the duo in LA.
“I was walking down Melrose and I hear some people going, ‘Amy! Amy!’ And I turn around, and it was them. They met that night. They’re engaged. She shows me the ring that’s been in his family…They became a couple, and when I met them on the street, they were engaged. I don’t know how that marriage worked out, but it was really sweet.”
New life rule: If you’re ever an extra in a movie, volunteer to get in the pool. Best case scenario: You fall in love and have the greatest “So how did you guys meet?” story of all time. And if not, at least you made some extra cash.
