This is the story of how a love of great food and art (oh, and HowAboutWe) brought the recently-engaged Meredith and Jordan together.
What was your first date?
Meredith: Jordan’s HowAboutWe date was a scavenger hunt at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and mine was watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” in a Manhattan movie theater. But our first date was actually dinner at Rachel’s on 9th Avenue, a few days after the Christmas snowstorm of 2010.
What was your favorite part of the date?
Jordan: The fact that we had so much to talk about. We talked for hours and could’ve gone on for longer.
Meredith: The fact that Jordan was kept waiting for nearly an hour (darn West Side Highway traffic!) and was totally nonplussed. He still seemed happy to have dinner with me, for which I am ever grateful!
When did you realize you wanted a second date?
We’re both really not sure…we had such a good time that it seemed like a no-brainer!
What part of his/her profile grabbed your attention the most?
Jordan: The fact that Meredith was interested in art and literature
Meredith: His intriguing photos, his sense of adventure and his creativity.
Now that you’re a couple, what’s your go-to date?
We’ve got favorite restaurants and we like to go to the movies, the museum, and explore our new homebase (Chicago). Lately, our “go-to” date, if there is one, is a semi-regular trip to Panera to work on wedding planning! That and trying to catch “Doctor Who” every week. Oh, and we have an annual tradition: watching the Oscar-nominated animated shorts when they hit theaters in February.
What’s your best dating advice?
Jordan: Find someone who loves you for who you are. No more, no less.
Meredith: Don’t over-analyze or stress about the big picture; just focus on having fun, and maybe something good will follow.
What’s been your most memorable couple experience thus far?
Meredith: The day of our proposal was deeply meaningful to both of us. Jordan went above and beyond to make it a special occasion — it started with an amazing, beautiful proposal in front of the Chagall stained glass windows at the Art Institute of Chicago (fortunately captured on camera by complete strangers!).
Then, we enjoyed a delicious fondue dinner at one of Chicago’s most romantic restaurants, Geja Cafe. Afterward, I found out Jordan booked a room at the Ritz-Carlton (when the front desk found out we’d just gotten engaged they switched us to a room with a fantastic view!), where we soaked up the sumptuousness, ordered room-service, and reveled in the sheer experience. We didn’t tell our family and friends until we got back home, and at that point, we enjoyed being in our own private little “bubble” for as long as we could.
Anything else you want to share?
Meredith: It’s actually really funny how Chicago and HowAboutWe conspired to bring us together. I first read about HowAboutWe in a hotel room magazine during my first trip to Chicago in 2010. I joined, and eventually met Jordan in New York (where we both grew up and were living). As fate would have it, a few months into our relationship, I got a job offer in Chicago.
Jordan encouraged me to go for it and, because he’d lived in Chicago before — he even helped me pick out my apartment. After a year of long-distance dating, he moved out here with me, which was a scary leap for both of us. Now we’re looking forward to taking it full circle and getting married back in New York!
