Anthony Rapp — Mark in the original Broadway cast of Rent, in case your adolescence was very different than mine — is working on a new short movie musical about gay hookup culture in New York. According to the project’s IndieGogo page, GRIND is about “the emotional vulnerability and danger involved in connecting with others in the irreversibly intrusive world we sign on for willingly” — in other words, dudes navigating Grindr through song.
Rapp plays Vincent, a witty, late-30s gay man living in Hell’s Kitchen with his hot-but-dumb underwear-model roommate. He begins to ghostwrite texts for the roommate, lessons are learned, songs are sung — pretty much, it’s everything you want in a movie musical about “multi screened hook up culture.” Also, unlike the movie version of Rent, it’s not directed by Home Alone auteur Chris Columbus, so that’s pretty promising. Actually, everything about this is pretty promising. Release dates have yet to be announced, according to Broadway.com, but you can tide yourself over with the trailer below:
