Whether you’re belting Whitney Houston, listening to an audio tape of your favorite trashy romance novel, or sneaking in a quick cigarette, there is crazy sense of private safety inside your car. Would you act the same way if you knew someone was watching you drive? This project by photographer Michael Butler, simply named Rodeo Drive, began as an attempt to explore this point between public and private space.
What Butler found peering into the sun stricken glass of luxury brand vehicles was an elite breed of resilient women – some aged, some beautiful, all intriguing. The expensive sunglasses alone prove these people ooze status and importance. The plastic surgery serves as sort of a tribal mask of a beauty-seeking society, their natural habitat.
