Japan’s Biggest ‘Naked Festival’ Features 9,000 Men Baring Their Butts for Good Luck

Nine thousand semi-nude men gathered at the Saidaiji Temple in Okayama on Saturday for Japan’s largest Hadaka Matsuri (裸祭り), or “naked festival.” Contrary to the 500-year-old ceremony’s name, no one actually gets naked but, wearing only a skimpy loincloth (or fudoshi), they might as well be. At midnight, the chilly revelers scramble to collect lucky sticks thrown out of a window by a Shinto priest. Tradition holds that grabbing one will guarantee you a year of good fortune.

We love the positive body image the naked festival promotes (come one, come all!) almost as much as we love butts — which, for future reference, is a lot. Enjoy!
