After living abroad for almost three years, photographer Ali Kate Cherkis returned to NYC with a new view on her former “home.” Her view of America changed after spending so much time viewing it from the outside and after returning, she had trouble readjusting. In a search to find her place in the ever changing metropolis, there it was, The Freedom Tower, serving it’s exact purpose – inspiration. “The Freedom Tower is a symbol of supreme hubris – the middle finger, the massive cock of America – and a tremendously profitable real estate venture,” she writes on her blog.
A park near her apartment had a gorgeous view of downtown Manhattan, where she frequently visited for motivation. As the summer approached, she began to notice the men of her neighborhood flock to the pier to sunbath and “strut.” The Speedos revealed a whole different kind of freedom tower. But like the magnificent steel structure, they too were showing off to the world, asserting their own power.
If these photos don’t do anything else for you, allow them to serve as proof that there is a place of acceptance for everyone.
