Whether you were crowned prom queen or ditched the cliché festivities to go bowling in your thrift-store dress, your school probably had a seeming tacky formal function to celebrate the senior class in their last hoorah before graduation. While the tissue paper flowers may have made their way across six decades, the style of popular prom dresses has drastically morphed over the years. The ’40s and ’50s, for example, were filled with cap sleeves, lace and hoop skirts. The 1980s were dominated by metallic fabrics and a whole lot of hairspray. And today, girls are going for more cubic zirconia than Paris Hilton’s jewelry box. So let’s take a stroll back through the years of prom and try to remember “What the heck were we thinking?”
