British actress, activist and all-around awesome lady Emma Thompson has written a “handbook on sex and emotion” for her 13-year-old daughter, Gaia. No need to cringe – this isn’t a mother-daughter version of the Kama Sutra, but what sounds like a healthy, empowering guide to taking ownership of one’s body.
Deeply concerned by the young age at which today’s kids are exposed to porn and other explicit material, Thompson wanted Gaia to know that by “[listening] to what’s going on in your emotional language, you will be able to keep the sexual activities safe.” This sounds a little like the book that taught a generation of pubescent women about their boobs, American Girl’s The Care and Keeping of You (working title: Everybody Menstruates).
Also, yikes, Thompson was apparently tongue-kissed by an “elderly magician” at her eighth birthday party. Creepy magicians definitely deserve their own chapter in any sex handbook.
