The Atlantic‘s Alexander Huls has a great story today on the romcom‘s shoddy year in 2013. To be clear: Depictions of romance in the movies continue to be as strong as ever. It’s just that now, instead of tired plotlines carried by OCD-but-cute-in-love protagonists, these films are actually starting to depict the kind of complicated love we’ve been trained exactly not to expect from Hollywood. (See: Her, Blue Is The Warmest Color, Enough Said.) So here’s to films that celebrate actual, human representations of what love looks like from every complicated angle and harsh lighting. Sorry not sorry, Harry and Sally!
