Has anyone ever said to you, “It’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is a poor man”? I’m not sure of the origin, but it seems like something that’s been around for centuries, and has definitely stood the test of time given that most women no longer rely solely on men to provide for them.
Admittedly, there’s something appealing about falling in love with a guy and later finding out he happens to be a millionaire, and can whisk you off to a weekend in Bali at a moment’s notice. And on a more realistic level, a decent income can often signify a myriad of attractive qualities: responsibility, maturity, ambition, dedication, etc.
However, a guy who goes out of his way to awkwardly or obviously flaunt his money is, to me, a huge turn-off, no matter how how deep his bank account is.
For example, Jane Pratt of XOJane.com wrote today:
“Not long ago, I heard about these guys going through trash cans next to ATMs, digging for receipts with the highest bank balances on them, and then looking to pick up girls using these receipts that they wrote their numbers on the back of (run-on sentence and ended with a preposition — I KNOW). Super yuck. Oh well, I guess the girl who responds to that deserves the jerk she gets.”
Has anyone ever heard of this before? Super horrifying (and not only because it’s misleading and vaguely criminal). Other obnoxious ways guys have flaunted their money to me on dates:
-At a restaurant, telling me to “go ahead and order whatever I want,” and then patting his wallet, reassuringly.
-Going on and on (and on!) about his (father’s!) 5th Avenue apartment, sailboat, and how much the refurbishing cost.
-Asking me how much I make (rude!) and then laughing, pityingly (double rude!).
It always seems to me like guys who rely so much on money to make an impression are lacking in other important qualities (confidence, personality, etc.) Which is not to say that men who do make a decent living should go out of there way to hide this or downplay their lifestyle…just that they shouldn’t go out of their way to advertise the fact.
That having been said, if there is a guy out there with a swimming pool like Scrooge McDuck’s…call me.
(This post obviously leaves out women who flaunt their money, solely because, as a straight woman, I have less experience in that field. But I’m sure they do it just as obnoxiously…any guys out there want to clue us in?)
